Illegal drug discovered, 4 detained in N. Afghanistan

KABUL, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Police have discovered 354 kg of illegal drugs, including opium poppy and hashish, in northern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province and taken into custody four people on charges of involvement in the drug business, provincial police spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar said Thursday.

The arrested individuals, all Afghan nationals according to the official, were attempting to take the contraband out of the province.

Police have begun an investigation of the arrested individuals, the official further said.

In the efforts against illegal drugs, police have destroyed dozens of acres of poppy and hashish farms in several districts of Badakhshan province over the past couple of weeks. Enditem
