BUCHAREST, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Romania's opposition party, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), on Thursday filed a motion of censure against the government's first package of fiscal measures, condemning the executive's decision to bypass a parliamentary vote on the reforms.
AUR senator leader Petrisor Peiu read the motion during a joint session of the two chambers of parliament. Debate and vote are scheduled for Monday, July 14.
The motion, also backed by members of parliament from S.O.S. Romania, the Party of Young People (POT), and several independents, accuses the government of "usurping legitimate power" and undermining democratic representation.
The government approved the fiscal package last Friday and formally assumed responsibility for it in Parliament on Monday. Key measures include new value-added tax rates of 11 percent and 21 percent, higher excise duties on alcohol, fuel, and cigarettes, as well as a health insurance contribution for pensions exceeding 3,000 lei (688.97 U.S. dollars).
If the motion gets passed, the government under Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan will be dismissed. If it fails, the fiscal package will be automatically adopted. Enditem
